Frequently Asked Questions
Why is reducing carbon dioxide so important?
Carbon dioxide is one of the principal causes of global warming, which presents an unprecedented challenge to all life on Earth. The international scientific community has confirmed that deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels like oil and coal are primarily responsible for climate change. To put it in the words of 350.org, “…global warming destabilizes the delicate balance that makes life on this planet possible. Just a few degrees in temperature can completely change the world as we know it, and threaten the lives of millions of people around the world.” But every one of us can help stop climate change…and we don’t have a moment to waste!
What is a carbon offset?
A “carbon offset” is an emission reduction credit from a project that results in less carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than would otherwise occur. Carbon offsets are typically measured in tons of CO2 and can be created by renewable energy projects, energy-efficiency, and land use and agriculture-based projects.
Doesn’t offering offsets just give people license to produce carbon with wild abandon?
Um…that definitely wouldn’t be the point we want to get across. Purchasing offsets is only a slice of the sustainable-living pie. Reducing your carbon footprint is what’s most delicious.
What is a carbon footprint?
Your “carbon footprint” represents the sum total of all the greenhouse gases you, personally, are responsible for putting in the atmosphere. (It’s called a “carbon footprint” because carbon dioxide is the principal cause of global warming.) Whenever you use energy created from fossil fuels such as oil or coal, you’re generating carbon emissions. This includes driving, flying in a plane, cooling and heating your home, and using electricity.
Why should I purchase your offsets?
Our offsets are generated locally in Florida, and every offset you buy goes toward helping the University of Florida reach their climate neutrality goals. In addition, Earth Givers is a non-profit. That means that your purchase is about reducing our impact on Earth…and not increasing our bottom line. There’s no other carbon offset organization like us!
How can I reduce my carbon footprint?
Our favorite question of all! You can start by checking out our Ways to Reducelist on the Earth Givers website.
I didn’t get my question answered….
Darn. But hey, you’re in luck. Send an e-mail to email@example.com and we’ll be happy to take care of that!
Leaving footprints on the competition…not the environment.
